Your Ultimate guide to the leading car scheme for disabled people

Am I eligible to join the scheme? To join the scheme you must receive one of the following allowances:

  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

What is PIP? “Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is replacing Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for disabled people between the ages of 16 and 64. This is happening for people even with an “indefinite” or “lifetime” award. If you are awarded the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of PIP, you will be able to lease the car.

You must also have 12 months remaining of your allowance when applying for the Motability Scheme.

Check if you are eligible:

How to find the best car for me? Talk to your Motability Expert as they will be able to offer the best personal advice and provide test drives. They will also be able to carry out suitability assessments and advise on suitable adaptations – a number of which can be carried out for free.

Many cars are available on Nil Advance payment so talk to the Expert about the latest offers.

Do I own the car when the lease ends? No, but at the end of your lease you have 3 options:

  1. Lease another new car using your Motability scheme
  2. Expand the lease keeping your current car longer than 3 years
  3. Return your car, your allowance will be reinstated to you

Where’s my nearest Motability dealer? Use the Motability Find A Dealer tool:

Do I have insurance cover? Yes, insurance is included for 2 named drivers.

Do I have breakdown cover? Yes as you are provided with RAC Cover. If you are driving abroad you should look at cover for foreign travel.

What do I do if my car needs a repair? Repairs and servicing from every day use are covered by the Scheme so contact your dealer.

How many miles can I do in my Motability car? Your allowance is 60,000 miles during the 3 year lease.

What do I do if I need new tyres? Your tyres are covered by the Scheme so contact your dealer.
