 Am I eligible?

Am I eligible to join the scheme? To join the scheme you must be receiving one of the following allowances:

- Higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
- Enhanced rate of the mobility supplement (WPMS)
- Armed forces independence payment (AFIP)

If I receive the Armed Forces Independence Payment can I join the Motability scheme? Yes, the Welfare Reform act 2012 means the AFIP was introduced and is eligible for the Motability scheme.

Can one household have several customers? There are no restrictions on numbers of who is eligible for Motability scheme in one household.

I am 65 and over can I join the Motability scheme? Yes if you receive one of the allowances listed.

What age do I have to be to receive the Disability Living Allowance? Disability Living Allowance (DLA) can be awarded from the 3rd birthday. DLA will be awarded up to the age of 16 as long as you satisfy the criteria. The Department for Working Pensions contact existing claimants before their 16th birthday to notify them they will be moving from DLA to Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

I only have a provisional licence, can I still use the scheme? There are no restrictions to join the scheme. You need to pass the required criteria, be the Motability permitted driver and be accompanied by a nominated driver who is over 21 and has had a full driving license for 3 years.

 Paying for your car

Can I use a hire purchase car on the scheme?  No, you can’t use hire purchase through the Motability scheme. 


Can I part exchange my car?
As a new customer starting a new Motability lease you can trade in your car. Talk to your Motability Expert to find out about part exchanging your car. 

Can I get the advanced payment back? No, the advanced payment needs to be paid in full before or on the day of the handover of your vehicle, it's not a deposit.

How do Motability collect payments? This is dealt with by a direct transfer from the relevant benefits agency every 4 weeks.

How much does it cost leasing through the scheme? This depends on your choice of car. Talk to your Motability Expert to find the right car for you.  

What cars are available on nil advance payments? We have a range of cars available on nil advance, talk to your Motability Expert to find out about the latest nil advance offers.

Why do some cars have an advanced payment? Your mobility allowance may not cover the cost of some of the larger or higher specification cars. These cars require an advance payment to the cover difference between your mobility allowance and the overall cost of the car you want.

 Financial Help

Can I apply for finance help? If you can’t afford the right vehicle for your needs the mobility charity may be able to provide financial help.

 How the scheme works

Do I own the car when the lease ends? No, as you’re using the Motability scheme the vehicle remains the property of the Motability operations. At the end of your lease you have 3 options;

1. Lease another new car using your Motability scheme
2. Extend your lease keeping your current car longer than 3 years
3. Return your car, your allowance will be reinstated to you

 Choosing your Motability vehicle

How do I find the best car for me? Your Motability Expert will help you find the best car for your needs and requirements after carrying out a Suitability Assessment.

What’s a suitability assessment? This is an assessment carried out by the Motability Expert, they will assess your needs and make suitable recommendations.

How do I find out more about WAV? Wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs) are available on the Motability scheme. These are vehicles suitable for a person in a wheelchair to travel in a vehicle while remaining within the wheelchair.

Will the vehicle be big enough? The Suitability Assessment and your Motability Expert will be able to make recommendations on which size vehicle is best for your requirements.

Can I change my mind after making a car application? Talk to your Motability Expert to talk to through your options.

Can I get a caravan or motorhome on the scheme? No. If you wish to tow a caravan you need to make alternative insurance and breakdown cover for this.

 Getting your vehicle

What do I need to take to the dealer to place an order? You will need the following:
- Certificate of entitlement
- A recent utility bill
- Other drivers that will be on the insurance need to be present with their driving license. Or they can fill in a driver consent form

What do I need to take when collecting my car? You will need your PIN, driving licenses of all drivers plus proof of identity such as a passport.

What is a PIN? This is a Personal Identification Number you will need to enter when picking up your vehicle. This confirms you accept the terms and conditions. Your PIN will be sent to you before you need to collect your car.

Can someone else take delivery of my car on my behalf? No, you must be present to take delivery.
