10 Quick Tips On How To Keep Cool

The current heatwave has swept the country with no signs of leaving any time soon. If you want to enjoy the summer without getting hot and bothered, here are 10 tips on how to keep cool.

    1. Put ice in front of your fan - If you have a fan, put a bowl filled with ice in front of it. The ice cools the surrounding air and the fan then blows that cool air towards you.

    2. Close your curtains/blinds - Keep all curtains and blinds closed during the day to prevent the sunlight from heating up the room.

    3. Choose cotton - Light coloured bed linen made of lightweight cotton is more breathable and excellent for promoting ventilation and airflow.

    4. Use water - Normally it is advised to drink 6 to 8 glasses of water per day, however, during a heatwave this should increase. Drink 2 to 4 glasses of cool water per hour. Dab water on pressure points such as wrists, temples and elbows, where a little water will help cool your whole system.

    5. Open all doors - Circulating air throughout a room is just as important as letting in fresh air, so all doors should be opened along with windows.

    6.  Turn off all electrical items - Most electric items emit heat so turn off your lights, computer and TV. One light bulb might not seem like much of a heat risk but collectively, it can make a difference.

    7. Avoid big meals - Eating large meals will only make you feel warmer as digestion uses a lot of energy which in turn generates body heat. If you want to stay cool, eat smaller amounts of cold food
throughout the day such as fresh fruit and vegetables.

    8. Cool your pillow - Place your pillow in a plastic bag and then put it in the fridge throughout the day so when it comes to night time you will have a cool place to rest your head. Cooling your temples will also help to reduce heat throughout your body.

    9. Don’t fan yourself - Although using your hands to fan yourself will make you feel temporarily cooler, the action uses energy and will raise your body temperature in the long run. If you are going to fan yourself, use an object with a large surface area to create a fanning movement without putting in too much effort yourself.

    10. Cool off - Finally, rinsing off under cool water reduces the core body temperature so you can feel cool and clean.
