Nissan has helped the veterans of D-Day make their annual pilgrimage to Normandy with the supply of four support vehicles.
Every year, with the assistance of the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans, the heroes of D-Day make the journey to the beaches of France in London Black Cabs.
But with the veterans requiring more medical assistance and support as they get older, West Way in Mill Hill and Hanwell stepped up to support the charity with four Nissan X-Trails.
They will transport nursing staff, support staff, medical equipment and other supplies in this year’s convoy, which departed from Portsmouth on Sunday (June 3
rd).
Paul Davis, Secretary of the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans, said: “We hope the veterans don’t need the help of the X-Trails but its brilliant that we have them ready just in case. We cannot thank West Way and Nissan enough for their support.”
Martin Corp, General Manager at West Way Mill Hill, said: “On behalf of myself and Rab Miah at West Way Hanwell, it is an honour and a privilege to help these great men get to Normandy. We support several events but this is by far the best one for me — and we’d support them again in a heartbeat.”
Special guests at the handover of the X-Trails were two D-Day veterans and Mill Hill residents — Tom Schaffer, 91, from the Parachute Regiment, 13
th Battalion, 6
th Airborne, and Fred Harris, 94, from 621 Field Squadron, Royal Engineers, 7
th Armour Division.
Tom said: “It’s absolutely wonderful that Nissan wants to help us, we’re very grateful to them and to West Way, who have been lovely.”
