Nissan brings sustainable energy power play to 150-year-old community cricket club

Nissan has been celebrating the countdown to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 by bringing its game changing Nissan Energy Solar including xStorage Home – an energy storage system – to hundreds of fans at local cricket club Beddington CC in South London.

Nissan has been celebrating the countdown to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 by bringing its game changing Nissan Energy Solar including xStorage Home – an energy storage system – to hundreds of fans at local cricket club Beddington CC in South London.

A pioneer in electric vehicles (EV) and battery technology, xStorage Home installation at Beddington CC will provide an environmentally friendly and more grid independent way of generating and storing energy while saving hundreds of pounds each year on its energy bills.

Part of Nissan’s vision to make electric vehicles even more useful to customers, Nissan Energy Solar and xStorage Home creates an “ecosystem” around electric mobility, finding new ways to generate and store clean energy to support the company’s mission of moving people to a better world, through Nissan Intelligent Mobility.

Kalyana Sivagnanam, Managing Director at Nissan Motor (GB) Ltd., said: “Nissan’s Intelligent Mobility (NIM) strategy puts it at the forefront of research into how batteries from electric vehicles can be used in ‘second-life’ applications. The installation at Beddington CC gives us the opportunity to bring cleaner energy management to a community and save the club money on their future energy bills. We are always looking to demonstrate the diverse ways in which our battery technology can benefit homes, communities and businesses and this latest installation breaks new boundaries.”

The xStorage battery will increase the efficiency of solar panels on the club’s pavilion, by storing the energy they generate for use later, and reducing the club’s reliance on expensive energy supplied at peak times by the grid. This also reduces the club’s reliance on fossil fuels, by increasing the integration of renewable energy technologies, and creates a more sustainable energy future for the club.

Andrew Tibble, Club President at Beddington CC said: “Beddington Cricket Club is one of thousands of clubs across the country that are much-loved icons of British summertime, enjoyed by players and the local community. But we face a real challenge every year in finding new ways to generate and save money to cover vital running costs. So, we have been delighted this season to partner with Nissan and install the solar panels and xStorage system that will save thousands of pounds over the coming seasons, enabling us to reinvest in club facilities. This is the first step to taking a more sustainable approach to the future running of the club.”

Phil Tufnell, former England international cricketer and Nissan cricket ambassador, helped launch the newly installed xStorage Home technology at Beddington Cricket Club on the 23rd May and was joined by the official ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy.

“Community cricket clubs are the starting place for many future international players and it’s great to see that even after 150 years ‘Not Out’, Beddington Cricket Club is finding ways to embrace innovations that enable it to remain at the heart of the community.

Visiting the club with Nissan and the ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy is a great way to experience the excitement that is building ahead of the tournament – which I’m sure will be followed up and down the country and around the world. Bring on the carnival atmosphere!”

As official automotive sponsors of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, Nissan has been leading the charge and driving the ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy Tour across England and Wales for 100 days, powered by Europe’s best-selling EV, the Nissan LEAF.

Campbell Jamieson, General Manager, Commercial, ICC, said: “We are delighted to see Nissan partnering with grassroots cricket to support our shared values around sustainability. We have worked closely with Nissan on our Domestic Trophy Tour which saw the trophy taken across the UK in a Nissan LEAF making this the first ever ICC Trophy Tour powered by an all-electric vehicle.”

As part of Nissan’s commitment to cricket and to celebrate the partnership with the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 throughout the summer, Nissan launched the #SweepTheNation campaign fronted by cricket legend Phil Tufnell, on 30th May across Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Nissan will use technology – the Nissan Excitement Algorithm – to amplify the excitement of cricket lovers (and even some doubters!) across social media, to ensure World Cup fever reaches every corner of the UK. The Nissan Excitement Algorithm will track, measure and analyse social sentiment towards the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. By using the #SweepTheNation, fans will have the chance to win over 600 tickets to the event. Nissan #SweepTheNation vehicles packed with Nissan Intelligent Mobility features will be used to spread the word and get fans to the matches.
